Parkinson's Community Benefits

  • Medication/Care Management is critical for those living with Parkinson's disease, due to consistently changing symptoms and medications. In addition, monitoring of the dietary interactions with the medications is important to reduce symptoms and increase the quality of life for the resident. It is vital for residents with Parkinson's to have meds administered at precise times prior to and following meals, allowing proper absorption of Parkinson's-related medication. Unfortunately, this is often overlooked by assisted living communities and in-home caregivers who do not specialize in treating Parkinson's. The Quarry's caregivers are particularly trained with this in mind, which helps them to manage residents' symptoms. The Quarry asks patients and their doctors to fill out a detailed four-page form designed by the Parkinson's Resources of Oregon and OHSU that specifically addresses the personal characteristics of the resident. This allows our nursing staff, which has been extensively trained in movement disorders, to design a specific care plan to meet each resident's needs.
  • A Team Concept is utilized within The Quarry's Parkinson's unit to increase communication among the entire care team to better manage the resident's care. The care team may include the resident's spouse, extended family, trustees, nurses, neurologist, caregivers, fitness director, pharmacist, friends, dietary staff, foundation association, executive director, speech therapist, physician, medication aide, physical therapist and occupational therapist. They all work together and unite for one common purpose: to act as the resident's advocate and to provide a better quality of life for the resident. The Quarry holds team conference meetings scheduled: prior to admission, date of move-in, 30-day review, quarterly conference, upon change of condition and change in direction.
  • The Quarry's Health Services include licensed nurses operating within a safe, secure environment for the resident. There are licensed nurses available to residents 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Nurses are trained in working with orthostatic hypotension. This occurs when a resident's blood pressure drops by more than 20 mg of mercury within 2-3 minutes of standing. This situation may create an elevated fall risk or high risk of injury. The Quarry's caregivers and nurses closely monitor residents for the correct orthostatic blood pressure. Residents are set up on a weekly orthostatic blood pressure routine, and fall risk protocols and interventions are used to prevent injury when hypotension is identified. The healthcare staff have full-day, in-classroom training specific to Parkinson's disease. This is in addition to general orientation and required training, monthly in-service training, and review of program differences involving diet, exercise and medication management.
  • Dietary Considerations are especially critical for Parkinson's residents. Specifically, issues that are closely monitored include: protein interaction with medications, soy products, meal times, snacks, swallowing thickeners, high-fiber diets and preferences. Constipation is a common condition relating to Parkinson's. Therefore, exercise, fluid needs and fiber are carefully managed.
  • Neuro Fit exercise classes offered at The Quarry are designed specifically for those with Parkinson's or other movement disorders. These classes are taught twice a week by Jeanette Caples, who has been certified as a Neuro Fit instructor. The classes focus on balance, strength, vocal and speech training, and self-esteem.
  • The Quarry's Positive Approach includes providing social activities, entertainment, involvement with the Parkinson's community at large, guest speakers and Parkinson's support groups. These activities encourage residents to interact with others instead of isolating. The Parkinson's support group meets monthly at The Quarry and involves residents and their families.
